Hitachi to Start Mass Producing Plasma Display Panels
|
February 3, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Hitachi Ltd. may start mass producing plasma
display panels in early 2001, according to Etsuhiko Shoyama, executive
vice president of the company.
|
He also said the company plans to invest in production lines early in
2000.
Shoyama revealed the plan at a meeting with reporters on Jan. 28. He
has been informally appointed company president as of April 1.
Details of the planned investment will be decided this fall, he said.
Hitachi is developing a PDP in cooperation with Fujitsu Ltd. Both companies
have already started projects such as the "Panel Development Project"
for PDP product planning, the "Advanced Performance Project" aimed at
improving panel brightness and the "Advanced Process Development Project"
to confirm process technology for volume production of low-cost panels.
According to Shoyama, Hitachi intends to invest in lines for full PDP
mass production because the panels have seen significant performance
improvements.
