  • [NET & COM '99] Takaoka Exhibits Japan's First WBT Terminal
  • February 5, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Takaoka Electric Mfg. Co., Ltd. exhibited its thin client Windows-based terminal at the NET & COM '99 show.
The show is being held from Feb. 2-5 at Makuhari Messe, Chiba prefecture, near Tokyo.

WBT is a special-purpose terminal that uses Windows NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition (WTS) from Microsoft Co., Ltd.

When WTS was announced in September last year, 11 companies expressed their intentions to provide WBT terminals. These companies include NEC Corp., Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd., Japan Computer Corp., Next Net Corp., Hitachi Ltd., Fujitsu Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp.

Takaoka shipped the WBT terminal now on display in January of this year. Takaoka is the first vendor to ship a WBT terminal in Japan.

The size of this terminal is as small as expected. In the picture, the small box beside the LCD monitor is the terminal. It is as small as a terminal adapter for ISDN.

The terminal incorporates a 200MHz Cyrix MediaGX chip. The price is 98,000 yen (US$875), including keyboard, mouse and network interface. The terminal can also be used as a client for MetaFrame. because the ICA protocol of Citrix Systems Inc. is supported.
