  • Gateway Japan Introduces All-in-one PC with K6-2 Chip
  • February 9, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Gateway 2000 Japan Inc. on Feb. 8 introduced a desktop personal computer called PROFILE that is powered by a K6-2 microprocessor from Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
The new PC, with a built-in liquid crystal display (LCD), is the first Gateway product that runs on an AMD microprocessor.

PROFILE is the second product line that Gateway has developed specifically for the Japanese market.

Its predecessor, the Gateway SOLO 3100 notebook PC, was simultaneously launched in other markets in September 1998, after having been designed for Japan.

Gateway said that PROFILE will be marketed only in Japan. The PC is aimed at customers with elementary and intermediate computing skills and corporate customers including SOHO workers, and it is priced at 249,800 yen (US$2,210).

The PROFILE PC features a 15.1-in. color thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) that shows 65,536 colors at a maximum resolution of 1,024 x 768 dots. The motherboard is installed behind the LCD. Its body measures 390mm wide by 190mm deep by 400mm high.

The PC has a 12.7mm-thick 2.5-in. HDD designed for notebook PCs. The HDD has a capacity of 4.3GB, the company said.

A 2x DVD-ROM drive and an FDD are built into the right and left sides of the PROFILE PC body, respectively. The DVD-ROM drive can also operate as a 20x CD-ROM drive.

The PROFILE PC features the AMD-K6-2 400MHz microprocessor, 64MB in standard main memory (and a maximum of 256MB) and an ATI Rage Pro graphics chip from ATI Technologies of Canada. Also, it has a 4MB video memory.

For its interface, the PROFILE PC has two USB ports, a serial port, a parallel port, a 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX autochanger port and a 56kbps modem. Two Type II and one Type III PC cards are attachable to the PC, and it is powered through an AC adopter.

When ordering, customers can specify a larger main memory and have a choice of office applications software.
