  • TDK Introduces CompactFlash-Type 56Kbps Modem
  • February 19, 1999 (TOKYO) -- TDK Corp. began selling a fax modem called DF56CF that is similar in size to a CompactFlash memory (a tiny memory card) based on Type I specifications.
    The product, which is priced at 21,800 yen (US$180), was available from Feb. 12.

    The product is intended for use with Windows CE machines or personal digital assistants (PDAs) with a slot for a CompactFlash. With a PC card adapter sold separately, the modem also can be used on a notebook PC.

    This modem can work in both V.90 and K56flex transmission protocols with an automatic protocol detection capability for incoming data. The transmission speed is 56kbps for data and 14.4kbps for fax. Power consumption is 480mW for 3.3V usage and 800mW for 5.0V usage.

    TDK said that the available operating systems for this modem are Windows 98/95 and Windows CE 2.0/2.11. Certified terminals include CASSIOPEIA E-55 (Casio Computer Co., Ltd.'s Windows CE machine) and Mobile Gear II MC-R300/510 (NEC Corp.'s Windows CE machine).

    Included with the DF56CF are driver software and an adapter cable for connecting with a telephone line, according to TDK.
