HDS Introduces Speedy IBM-Compatible Mainframe Computer
|
February 26, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Hitachi Ltd. announced that Hitachi Data
Systems Corp. (HDS), a U.S. subsidiary, will ship the high-performance
IBM S/390-compatible mainframe computer called Hitachi Skyline Trinium
in the third quarter in the U.S. market.
|
The Hitachi Skyline Trinium series (or Trinium) is a successor model
to the existing Skyline series. HDS had announced that it would develop
the Trinium in September 1998.
The newest HDS mainframe computer features a processor with a performance
twice that of the existing chip, according to HDS. The microchip was
developed based on state-of-the-art bipolar-CMOS technology using copper
wiring.
The company said that the Trinium series has a larger capacity in the
number of processors to be accommodated than the current Skyline series.
HDS will begin by introducing a model with a maximum of 12 processors
in the third quarter of 1999 followed by a 16-processor (maximum) model
in the first quarter of 2000. The estimated performance of the 16-processor
model is more than 3 billion instructions per second (MIPS). It targets
the performance level of the highest-end IBM-compatible mainframe.
The newly developed processor maintains application-level compatibility
with the existing processors, while it provides a larger address space
than before and is capable of supporting a maximum 64GB main memory.
This memory capacity is 32 times larger than that of the IBM S/390,
which has a 2GB maximum memory, according to HDS.
Due to the increased memory capacity, a maximum of 512 channels will
be supported. Disk capacity also will be enhanced.
A new channel interface called Fibre Connection Channel (FICON) will
be made available in addition to the conventional channel interface.
The largest configuration can include 48 FICONs.
Also, the Trinium computer provides a "Virtual Server Facility" (VSF)
to logically divide hardware resources to configure multiple logical
servers on a single system. With this feature, it will be possible to
run multiple applications on a single Trinium system. Otherwise, they
would require multiple systems.
