Microsoft Japan to Split Development, Distribution Units
|
February 26, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Microsoft Co., Ltd. of Japan said it will
transfer its development and distribution units to two separate companies
to be set up May 3, thereby enabling Microsoft to concentrate on sales
and marketing.
|
The Japanese unit of the U.S. software giant announced the reorganization
plan on Feb. 22. The two companies will be Microsoft Product Development
Ltd. and Microsoft Asia Ltd., and both will have headquarters in the
United States.
The decentralization strategy by business units is for the purpose of
strengthening cooperative ties with the parent company, Microsoft Corp.,
and to promote a transferring of decision-making power to each unit.
Microsoft Product Development will perform product localization in the
Far East region, which Microsoft Corp. has assigned to the Japanese
company. The localization includes the development of Japanese-version
products.
Akio Fujii, managing director of Microsoft Japan responsible for development
in the Far East region, will assume the post of president of Microsoft
Product Development.
Microsoft Asia will be in charge of product distribution, sales and support.
Pieter Knook, vice president, Far East, Microsoft, was appointed to
be president of that unit.
