| Sanwa Bank Picks Hitachi CORBA Products for Branch System

January 6, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Sanwa Bank Ltd., one of Japan's major city
banks, told Nikkei Computer magazine that it would revamp its total
branch system by employing common object request broker architecture
(CORBA) products from Hitachi Ltd.

The bank will conduct the revamp for one year starting from April 2000.
Sanwa plans to replace 4,000 terminal units in branches. It will begin
the new system development in early 1999 and complete building the system
by March 2000.
The new system will be totally based on CORBA technology. Hitachi's UNIX
server with "TPBroker," CORBA-based middleware, will be installed as
a hub server in the bank's system center. Terminals in the branches
and personal computers will be able to access mission critical servers
or information servers via the hub server.
The new system will process about 300,000 transactions per hour. It is
rare for CORBA products to be used in a such heavy transaction processing
application.
Sanwa Bank was at first anxious about using the CORBA development environment
for its new system. However, the bank said decided to use CORBA because
WorkCoordinator is an effective development tool. WorkCoordinator is
a workflow management engine that Hitachi released in November 1998.
