  • Japanese Enterprises Use Internet for Information Interchange
  • January 8, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Large enterprises in Japan are using the Internet to send messages rather than to gather information, thus positioning email as an important data exchange tool.
This trend was confirmed by a "Questionnaire on Internet providers usage" conducted by Nikkei Communications magazine in October 1998. The number of companies that responded were 842, including firms listed in the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

In 1997, information gathering by Web servers accounted for 70.8 percent of Internet usage, whereas information exchange via email represented 78.6 percent in 1998, more than a 10-point increase over the 66.7 percent in 1997. This trend shows that most firms are positioning email as an important information exchange tool.

Also, more companies have been using the Internet to distribute information on Web servers. This percentage was 49.9 percent in 1997, and in 1998 it was 59.3 percent, an increase of 9.4 points.

A percentage of employees who use Internet mail is rising. In 1997, 64.1 percent of firms said "less than 10 percent" of workers were using Internet mail, whereas 52.0 percent in 1998 were, a decrease of 12.1 points. However, "more than 70 percent" answers increased from 9.1 percent in 1997 to 15.2 percent in 1998.

In 1998, most businesses were using the Internet not only to browse Web servers to get information, but also to make the best use of the Internet to distribute their own messages. An increasing number of companies are using hosting services for Web servers. It is certain that the Internet will continue to be used mainly for information distribution in 1999 as well.
