New Year Special Features '99

  • JEIDA Chairman Welcomes Temporary PC Tax Cut in Japan
  • January 12, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Taizo Nishimuro, chairman of the Japan Electronic Industry Development Association (JEIDA), said he "would like to thank the government once again" for its decision to implement a personal computer tax reduction in April.
The government plans to temporarily raise the tax deductible ceiling for information devices.

Nishimuro, who is also president of Toshiba, made the comment during his opening speech at the joint New Year's party of JEIDA and the Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) held at a hotel in downtown Tokyo on Jan. 6.

Hitherto, the maximum tax deductible amount for a company for the purchase of business equipment has been 100,000 yen (US$900), but the government will raise it to 1 million yen per PC for the limited period of one year starting in April 1999.

When this tax cut is implemented, the user companies will not have to use PCs for the legally designated depreciation period of six years. JEIDA had long been asking the government for such a measure to stimulate corporate users' demand for new PCs. The government decided at the end of December to implement the plan as a measure to stimulate the economy.

Nishimuro welcomed the tax cut plan and said, "Although it is limited to one year, it will become an encouraging factor for motivating corporate users to invest in information systems."

"It would have been better still if the implementation of the tax cut could be front-loaded by a month to include March, which is the demand season for corporate users," said Tadashi Okamura, senior vice president of Toshiba.

But all in all, the participants welcomed the news that the PC industry's long-standing request has finally been granted, even though it will only last for a year.
