| Korea to Expand ATM-Based Information Network
January 13, 1999 (SEOUL) -- Korea's Ministry of Information and Communications
said the government will upgrade the nation's phone lines to fit asynchronous
transfer mode systems.
|The aim is to provide quicker access to the Internet. The ministry said
the installation of fiber optic cables is near completion in major cities
around the nation.
The ministry said the government will also develop Internet access software
in 1999, one year ahead of its original plan. The software will offer
the quickest way to transmit data on the information superhighway.
Under the ministry's plan, all institutions and companies in Korea will
access the high-speed Internet service by the year 2002.
