Toshiba to Make 128Mb DRAM with Smallest Chip Size

January 13, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Toshiba Corp. said that it will produce 128Mb
dynamic random access memory (DRAM) microchips with a die (chip) size
of about 60 sq. mm, the industry's smallest.

The chip size is equivalent to or even smaller than that of 64Mb DRAM
microchips.
Toshiba said it adopted a 0.18-micron design rule as well as an improved
memory cell structure to realize that chip size. The company has not
provided details of the memory-cell structure of the microchips, but
it confirmed that the structure had been verified using memory cells
with a 0.25-micron design rule.
Toshiba is studying the concept of using the same technology for 64Mb
DRAM microchips to shrink the chip size to about 30 sq. mm to 35 sq.
mm. However, it has not been decided whether the technology will be
adopted for these microchips, company officials said.
