Toshiba Releases Notebook PC with 300MHz Mobile Pentium
|
January 14, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Toshiba Corp. debuted a 300MHz B5-size notebook
personal computer, the DynaBookSS PORTEGE 3020, which is only 19.8mm
thick and weighs 1.19kg.
|
The model features Intel KK's 300MHz mobile Pentium with MMX technology,
which was also announced by Intel on Jan. 7, the same day Toshiba revealed
its new notebook PC.
The DynaBookSS PORTEGE 3020 is a successor to the DynaBookSS
PORTEGE 3010. The difference between the two is solely the processor.
All other hardware specifications are the same in all respects as conventional
models.
The conventional models give users a choice of either Windows 95 or 98
at startup, but the new machine comes in two separate models: "Model
CTW" with pre-installed Windows 95 and "Model CT" with pre-installed
Windows 98. The specifications of both of the models are basically the
same apart from the difference in their operating system.
The new model is targeted at mobile users or users who intend to use
it as their second PC. The company does not offer application models
with the 3020 as it did with the conventional machine for home users.
The standard model of the DynaBookSS PORTEGE 3020 comes with a 4.3GB
hard disk drive and 64MB of main memory (maximum of 96MB). The liquid-crystal
display (LCD) is a 10.4-in. color thin-film transistor (TFT) panel.
The graphics chip is NeoMagic's NM2160. Video memory is 2MB, which permits
the display of up to 16,770,000 colors in 800 x 600 dots. The sound
is compatible with the SoundBlaster Pro.
The PC card slot allows use of two Type II cards. A PC card modem supporting
56kbps is bundled. The external 3.5-in. floppy disk drive (an accessory)
can be used by connecting it to a specialized connector on the machine.
The machine has a lithium-ion secondary battery. The standard battery
runs about 1.5 to 3.5 hours, but the optional large-capacity battery
can run for about 3 to 7 hours. The size is 257mm wide x 199mm deep
x 19.8mm thick. The weight including the battery is 1.19kg.
Options for conventional models such as the large-capacity battery and
input and output adapter are all supported by the new model.
The new model is expected to be released on Jan. 15, 1999 at an open
price. The price in shops is expected to range from 260,000 to 280,000
yen (US$2,330-2,510), while the total number of both models expected
to be sold a month is 10,000 units.
