  • Informix's Japan Unit Takes Over Red Brick Systems
  • January 14, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Informix K.K. of Japan announced that following the completion of the acquisition of Red Brick Systems Inc. by its U.S. parent company Informix Corp. in late 1998, the Japanese unit has taken over Red Brick Japan.
Specifically, Red Brick Japan was merged into Informix's Japanese unit as of Jan. 1. Red Brick's software business has become a part of Informix's new data warehouse division.

Fumitaka Tezuka, former president of Red Brick Japan, is assuming the responsibilities of vice president and managing director of the software business.

Informix of the United States purchased Red Brick with a view toward strengthening its data warehouse business. The acquisition came after Informix obtained Red Brick's decision support system products for data warehousing. Informix intends to integrate the former Red Brick's product line into its decision support product range called Decision Frontier.

An agreement on the acquisition was reached in early October 1998, and the purchase price was about US$35 million.

Funds and staffing power about twice the size of those of Red Brick will be injected into the data warehouse division, according to Shoichi Hori, president of Informix of Japan.

"While Red Brick Japan had earlier targeted a 100 percent increase in sales for 1999, we will aim for an increase of 200 percent," Tezuka said.
