NTT Sets Up Venture Specializing in Network Games
|
January 15, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. established
a planning company on Jan. 12 to explore businesses related to network
games.
|
The new company is expected to provide server operation services and
user management services, among others, aimed at game software companies
by offering communications software development tools as well as programs
for servers used for network games carried over the Internet. It is
called Eugine Inc.
Kazuhiro Mori, who originated the idea at NTT's Multimedia Communication
Promotion Department, will serve as president. The initial capital is
70 million yen (US$629,000).
NTT and Mori are expected to invest 64 million yen and 6 million yen,
respectively.
In about a year the company hopes to organize the corporate structure
for its overall business. At that time it intends to decide whether
to turn the new company to a profit-making enterprise.
This is one of the venture business proposals selected among many within
the parent company and NTT group companies since November 1997.
Almost 200 ideas have been submitted so far. Two companies had been set
up as of June 1998.
They are eXWAY Inc., which engages in a business related to security
information input into smart cards, and Cyber Laboratory Inc., which
specializes in a business related to middleware for facilities management,
such as a large-scale database configurations.
NTT will continue to solicit business ideas. When more proposals with
great potential are seen, the company will establish other ventures.
