  • Global One Targets Japan's Telecommunications Market
  • January 22, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Global One, an international telecommunications concern, will make serious moves into Japan this year, according to its 1999 business plan aired on Jan. 19.
Global One is a joint venture established by Deutsche Telekom AG, France Telecom and U.S.-based Sprint Communications Co.

Over the course of the year Global One will double the capacity of its lines linking Japan with the United States. It will also set up a new network node in Nagoya, complementing the two that it already has in Tokyo and Osaka, with the aim of attracting business users based in the Nagoya region.

In a recent visit to Japan, Global One President Gary D. Forsee made it clear that the company plans to start getting serious about developing its business in the Japanese telecommunications market. He said Japan ranks alongside places such as Hong Kong and Australia as one of the most important markets in the Asia- Pacific region.

He also said that 1999 would be a good time for Global One to make a decision on joining hands with partners in the domestic market. In saying so, he showed that there is a high likelihood of Global One entering at least one business tie-up with a Japanese telecommunications operator or power generation company before the end of the year.
