Nihon Sun Micro Sets Java2 Features with Five IT Firms
|
January 22, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Nihon Sun Microsystems K.K. announced Jan.
19 that it completed the "international features" of Java2 with the
cooperation of five other companies.
|
Java2 is the latest version of software to provide the Java development
and runtime environment. The five companies that cooperated with Nihon
Sun are Apple Japan Inc., Omron Software Corp., Justsystem Corp., IBM
Japan Ltd. and Fujitsu Ltd.
Apple, Omron Software and Justsystem joined in planning and setting the
specifications, while Justsystem, IBM Japan and Fujitsu assisted in
developing the software.
Nihon Sun launched the development of the international features two
years ago. However, for a period, Nihon Sun had to suspend the development
of Java features for international use, according to the company. It
finally completed the task with the help of the five participating companies.
Omron Software and Justsystem have already developed products designed
on the basis of the "Input Method Framework," a Japanese input feature
required as a part of the international features.
At a meeting to announce the completion of the international features,
IBM Japan revealed a plan to release Java2 (alpha version in English).
It runs on IBM's version of the UNIX operating system called AIX.
