ISO14001 Specs Adopted by Financial, Education Sectors
|
March 2, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Japanese industries and organizations being
inspected under the ISO14001 international standard for environmental
management systems are becoming more diverse.
|
The manufacturing industry has been the main applicant to comply with
the standard so far. Recent trends show that financial organizations,
local autonomies and educational institutions are applying for the certificate
as well.
According to the investigations by the Japan Standards Association, the
number of cases registered for ISO14001 certification was 1,632 at the
end of January 1999, up 90 cases from the end of December 1999.
Non-manufacturing registrants recently on the list are financial institutions
as Sakura Bank Ltd. and Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co., Ltd., as
well as trading houses Itochu Corp., Marubeni Corp. and Mitsubishi Corp.
Local government offices of Oita and Niigata prefectures, and educational
institutions such as Musashi Institute of Technology in Tokyo, also
have obtained the certificate.
The portion by industry of all the registered cases includes: electrical
machines (44.1 percent), general machines (9.4 percent), chemical (8.7
percent), transport vehicles (6.8 percent), and precision instruments
(5.0 percent). Two major types of industries, electrical and general
machinery, are losing share, while other industries are gaining share.
