  • HP, Hitachi Software, Marubeni to Form SI Venture
  • March 5, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Hewlett-Packard Japan Ltd., Hitachi Software Engineering Co., Ltd. and Marubeni Corp. said that they will set up a venture to provide information system construction services.
    The new company, Hewlett-Packard Solutions Delivery Ltd. is slated to be set up in late March. Kazuo Okada, manager of HP Japan's unit called Japan Regional Center, will assume the post of president.

    It will build systems for electronic commerce via the Internet and supply chain management. Demand for such services is expected to expand dramatically.

    The new company will use software packages provided by HP to construct information systems. Hewlett-Packard Co. of the United States, Hitachi Software and Marubeni will invest in the venture.

    It will work with HP Japan's consulting division to construct systems that can be developed quickly.

    Through the new venture, HP Japan aims to strengthen its direct sales. Meanwhile, Hitachi Software hopes to gain expertise in system construction, and Marubeni intends to explore distribution channels to sell system products to corporate users.

    Hitachi Software and Marubeni have teamed up in sales of software for overseas medical customers. By collaborating with HP Japan, which has large sales of medical measurement equipment, Hitachi Software and Marubeni hope to boost their overseas sales.

    The new firm will be capitalized at 1.1 billion yen. It will start operations on April 1, with a sales target of 10 billion yen for the initial year. The company intends to increase its capital to 3.3 billion yen (120.55 yen = US$1) in a few years.

    HP will hold a 51 percent stake, Hitachi Software 15 percent, and Marubeni 34 percent. HP Japan will transfer about 60 software engineers from its direct sales division while Hitachi Software will transfer about 40 engineers to the venture.

    Marubeni will provide three to five staff members as well as computer-related equipment and business application software to the new firm.
