  • Sharp Unveils New Windows CE Mobile Terminal in Japan
  • March 9, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Sharp Corp. announced the Telios HC-AJ1 mobile communication terminal equipped with Microsoft's Windows CE, Handheld PC Professional Edition, Version 3.0 in Japanese.
    The Osaka-based electronics company has been marketing mobile communication terminals equipped with Windows CE in foreign markets.

    The Telios terminal weighs about 810g and it comes in an A5 file-size box. An 8.4-in. color thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) monitor is designed to display 65,536 colors in 800 x 600 dot resolution.

    The retail price is expected to be around 130,000 yen (122.8 yen = US$1). Sharp said the product will ship on March 24, and that the targeted monthly production is around 5,000 units.

    It has a built-in V.90-capable fax modem (the maximum data transmission speed is 56kbps). Also, it has the personal digital cellular interface (PDC), enabling it to connect to a mobile phone via an attached cable.

    A special software program is pre-installed for easy access to the Internet, including email. The Telios Mail, an email software feature is capable of listing titles and texts of incoming mail, which allows users to easily locate priority mail. Also, it includes the PC File Viewer, which allows users to verify contents of attached files, such as word processing or spread sheet documents.

    The Easy Internet Access feature offers the choice of connection method depending on where it will be used -- LAN connectivity for the office, fax modem for the home and mobile phone when the user is on the road.

    The One-Touch Mail Receiving button on the body of the terminal is designed to automatically access the Internet by switching on the device as well as receiving email. It also offers an agent feature that allows users to automatically access registered Web pages.

    Additionally, many of Microsoft Co., Ltd.'s applications are pre-installed, including Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Pocket PowerPoint, Pocket Access, Pocket Outlook and Pocket Internet Explorer.

    The Telios is equipped with such interfaces as infrared communications, a USB port, a Type II PC card slot as well as a Type II compact flash card slot. It has a main memory of 16MB, and it can be expanded up to 32MB.

    The device measures 213mm wide by 192mm deep by 191.9mm high. An AC adapter or an exclusive battery pack (with lithium-ion batteries) can be used as the power source. The battery life in the standby mode is about 8 hours, and in continuous operation about 4.5 hours.
