  • IDO, Cellular Group to Start cdmaOne Roaming in Korea, H.K.
  • March 17, 1999 (TOKYO) -- IDO Corp. and the DDI Corp.-affiliated Cellular Telephone group will start overseas roaming services in December 1999 via cdmaOne digital mobile phones, for Japan's first such international roaming service.
The two companies recently signed an agreement with Shinsegi Telecom Inc., a leading Korean telecom carrier, and Hutchison Telecom (Hong Kong) Ltd., a mobile phone company in Hong Kong, to establish a network to provide roaming services.

When the roaming services start, cdmaOne users of IDO and Cellular Telephone group can use their telephone numbers and mobile phones registered in Japan from Korea and Hong Kong. The two companies plan to expand their overseas roaming services to the United States, Canada, Australia and other countries.

However, the frequencies for the cdmaOne services are different in various countries. First, IDO and Cellular Telephone group will market an overseas-roaming terminal that is compatible with frequencies in Japan, Korea and Hong Kong. The method to set usage fees is under consideration. It is expected that the two companies will ask users to pay for the overseas roaming services.

Already, the "WORLD WALKER" system of NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. (NTT DoCoMo) enables registered telephone numbers in Japan to be used for receiving phone calls while overseas.

This method requires automatically transferring the phone calls received at the user's mobile phone number in Japan to a special mobile phone for overseas use provided by NTT DoCoMo. Those phones are compatible with the local communication format.

To take advantage of this service, a customer must apply for the service in advance and rent a specific NTT DoCoMo mobile phone.
