  • Justsystem to Launch ATOK for Linux in July
  • March 19, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Justsystem Corp. plans to offer in July a Japanese-language input program tentatively named ATOK for Linux.
In September, the ATOK Server for Linux client/server Japanese-language input software is planned for sale.

"Since many firms are increasingly introducing Linux, we hope to offer a user-friendly Japanese-language input environment as quickly as possible. Because of this, we placed a higher priority on the development of Linux-enabled ATOK than the Windows NT-enabled ATOK. We hope our decision at this time will become the impetus to broaden Linux presence in Japan," said Kazunori Ukigawa, president of Justsystem.

Both ATOK for Linux and ATOK Server for Linux are equipped with a conversion engine similar to that of the ATOK12, the existing Windows/Macintosh-compliant product.

The ATOK Server for Linux is based on Java2, the newest version of the Java development/run-time environment. It has free and open source code that enables it to be used in any network environment where different clients and operating systems, including Windows, Macintosh and UNIX, co-exist.

Because the conversion engine and user dictionary are stored in the server, it also offers an advantage in that the conversion engine upgrade as well as the management of a common dictionary within a certain office can be performed on the server side.

The price has not yet been decided. Justsytem did not disclose the method of sales. However, it is likely that ATOK will be sold at retail stores as a packaged product or bundled with an operating system. ATOK Server, including support service, will probably be sold mainly through system integration vendors.

Justsystem also announced that preparations are underway to ship the Ichitaro Ark for Java Japanese-language word processing software at the same time as ATOK for Linux shipments.
