  • Chip Producers Consider More Production Cuts in July
  • July 3, 1998 (SEOUL) -- To offset declining prices of their products , Korea's major makers of microchips are considering additional production cuts this month, following curtailed output in June.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. plans to stop its production lines for a week in July, while Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. also will cut its manufacturing volume.

However, LG Semicon Co., Ltd. may not cut production this month, due to its relatively low level of inventory.

Samsung Electronics holds a 19 percent share of the global DRAM market, and Hyundai Electronics has a 9 percent share.

Their one-week production cuts are expected to help reduce global supplies by nearly 7 percent this month.

As of the end of June, 16Mb DRAMs were traded at US$2.84 to US$3.07 per unit, while 64Mb DRAMs stood at US$8.01 to US$8.66 per unit.
