  • Compaq Debuts High-End Notebook PC for Japanese Market
  • February 2, 1999 (TOKYO) — Compaq Computer KK of Japan released a high-end notebook computer targeted at the Japanese market.
The A4-size notebook personal computer, PRESARIO 1920, features a 300MHz mobile Pentium II microprocessor. The model is a high-end version of PRESARIO 1915. The company developed it as a thin and lightweight notebook PC for the Japanese market.

The PRESARIO 1920 (photo) has a body the same size as the current lower-end model with a 12.2-in. color thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display, but it employs a 13.3-in. color TFT-LCD. It is 295mm wide, 239mm deep and 31mm high. It weighs about 2.3kg, including battery. Its specifications other than the processor and display are almost the same as those of the current models.

It has a 64MB main memory with the maximum capacity of 192MB and a 4.0GB hard disk drive. The monitor can display a maximum of 1,024 x 768 dots in about 16.7 million colors.

It also has JBL Professional’s “JBL Pro Audio,” a micro speaker and a 56kbps modem.

As with the PRESARIO 1915, the “Wedge” will come with the PRESARIO 1920. The Wedge is a unit consisting of a floppy disk drive, a DVD-ROM drive and an optional connector for port replication. It is used in the bottom of the PRESARIO 1920. The built-in DVD-ROM drive can be used as a CD-ROM drive with a maximum speed of 20x.

It was put on sale on Jan. 26. Although it is sold at an open price, Compaq expects it will be priced at 360,000 yen (US$3,120).
