  • Sony Unveils Digital Camera with 2.1 Million Pixel CCD
  • February 3, 1999 (TOKYO) — Sony Corp. said it will launch the DSC-F55K digital still camera with a 2.11-million-pixel charge-coupled device (CCD) on April 1.
The DSC-F55K will be the first digital still camera for household use that offers resolution higher than 2 million pixels. The valid pixels of its CCD are 2.02 million, a Sony official said.

A still image can be filmed with a maximum of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels.

CCD manufacturers started shipping sample CCDs with more than 2 million pixels in the autumn of 1998. Makers of digital still cameras are gearing up to produce cameras that use the new CCDs. Sony has apparently taken the lead in product development.

Sony adopted its original flash memory card, called Memory Stick, as the recording medium for the DSC-F55K. The camera is the first of its kind that will accommodate the memory stick. Already available is a camcorder for use with a memory stick, but the memory stick must be set in an adopter card in accordance with PCMCIA standards.

Sony said that the recording format of DSC-F55K’s still images is Design rule for Camera File system (DCF) set by the Japan Electronic Industry Development Association.

Also, the DSC-F55K features recording motion images in the format of MPEG1 (Motion Picture Experts Group Phase1).

The MSA-16A memory stick with 16MB of memory, and priced at 7,700 yen (US$67), will be introduced at the same time as the camera.

Due to its large capacity, the MSA-16A enables recording 10 minutes and 40 seconds of MPEG1 picture data filmed in the “video mail mode” (160 x 112 pixels).

The DSC-F55K measures 103mm by 79.1mm by 48mm and it weighs about 250g. The camera will be priced at 115,000 yen (US$995) including an attached memory stick with a 4MB capacity.
