  • Japan’s 1998 PC Shipments Fall 0.9 Pct., Dataquest Says
  • February 9, 1999 (TOKYO) — Gartner Group Japan K.K.’s Dataquest unit said that Japan’s 1998 shipments of personal computers from manufacturing plants registered 7.77 million units, for a year-on-year decline of 0.9 percent.
The decrease was caused by a slump in sentiment among enterprise users, who have been cautious about investments in information systems, the research group said.

Although Japan’s PC market is sluggish, 1998 shipments of notebook PCs increased 9.1 percent compared to 1997. The ratio of notebook PC shipments to the total reached 45 percent.

The top five companies in terms of PC units delivered in 1998 are: NEC Corp. (24.8 percent), Fujitsu Ltd. (23.1 percent), IBM Japan Ltd. (10.2 percent), Toshiba Corp. (7.2 percent) and Hitachi Ltd. (5.5 percent).

Apple Japan Inc. fell to sixth place from fifth a year earlier in terms of shipments, with Hitachi taking the fifth rank in 1998. However, Apple Japan’s market share has been increasing since August 1998 because of brisk sales of iMac PCs.

Sony Corp., Gateway 2000 Japan Inc., Dell Computer Corp. of Japan and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. are enjoying larger shipments. They all registered double-digit increases from the previous fiscal year on a unit basis. Sony rose to the fourth rank in the final quarter of 1998.
