  • Sales of Ink-Jet Printers in Japan Hit Record High at Year-End
  • January 20, 1999 (TOKYO) — Japan’s ink-jet printer market expanded further during the 1998 year-end sales season to reach a record high.
Nikkei Personal Computing learned from printer manufacturers that their deliveries during the fourth quarter of 1998 hit a peak.

Seiko Epson Corp., which had the largest market share in the first half of 1998, delivered 550,000 units of A3-size and A4-size models. It delivered 150,000 units of A3-size models, a 50 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year.

Canon Inc., ranked second, started shipments in late November 1998 and sustained brisk sales with its “BJ F600” and other models. It increased deliveries by 30 percent in the two end-of-year months.

Hewlett-Packard Japan Ltd. increased its number of units sold by a large 150 percent.

Seiko Epson says its market share is around 60 percent. That translates into around 900,000 units in market size for the fourth quarter of 1998, up 50,000 units compared to the same period the previous year.
