  • Fujitsu Personal, Sony Release 1.3GB MO Products
  • January 26, 1999 (TOKYO) — Fujitsu Personal System Ltd. announced 1.3GB MO drives, and Sony Corp. debuted an MO disk with the same storage capacity.
Both products comply to specifications set in “GIGAMO,” a 3.5-in. MO disk standard jointly developed and announced by Fujitsu Ltd. and Sony last November.

With large 1.3GB capacity, GIGAMO adopted magnetically induced super resolution technology to bring the transfer rate up to 5.92MB/sec.

Fujitsu Personal is a marketing company belonging to the Fujitsu group. It sells personal devices for business such as personal computers and peripheral devices.

Fujitsu Personal will offer five types of GIGAMO-compliant products, all of which will use drives made by Fujitsu. The Windows version for the external “SMB-1300W” drive will be available at 119,000 yen (US$1,050). Shipments will begin in mid-February.

Sony’s GIGAMO-compliant “EDM-G13C” MO disk will be available at an open price and will go on sale as Feb. 5.
