  • Japan’s ITS Market to Expand Greatly, MPT Council Says
  • March 1, 1999 (TOKYO) — Japan’s intelligent transport systems (ITS) market will expand to nearly 100 trillion yen (US$822.3 billion) in 2015, according to the Telecommunication Technology Council.
The council is under the auspices of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

Of the total amount, about 75 trillion yen will be related to information and communications systems.

The projected figures are in the council’s Feb. 22 report submitted upon the MPT’s request. The request focuses on the ways future information systems should relate to the ITS concept.

In 2015, the 75-trillion-yen market will comprise three components: communication and broadcast services, information equipment, and ITS infrastructure.

Of those, the market for communication and broadcast services will take shape in 2003, upon the completion of an intelligent road system called Smartway.

Smartway, which is promoted by the Construction Ministry, will have transmission capabilities for various types of information. The council said the market will reach 60 trillion yen by 2015.

About 3.5 million vehicles are now equipped with navigation systems. By 2015, ITS-equipped vehicles, including those with navigation systems, will reach 42 million units.

A total of 1.07 million jobs will likely be created in related industries, the report added.
