  • Toshiba Launches 3 PC Models With Overseas Specs
  • March 5, 1999 (TOKYO) — Toshiba Corp. launched three notebook personal computers with overseas specifications that are aimed at foreign nationals living and working in Japan.
They are the Portege 3020CT, Satellite 2540XCDT and Tecra 8000 FA53.

All three products have an English keyboard and the Windows 95 or 98 operating system.

Toshiba Direct PC is ready to receive orders via telephone. The operating system can be converted into Japanese for an additional 10,000 yen (122 yen=US$1).

Since 1998, Toshiba has been marketing PCs with export specifications in Japan through Toshiba Direct PC. Most specifications, except the keyboard and the operating system, are the same as those available in Japan.

The Portege 3020CT, a thin B5-sized notebook, comes with a built-in 300MHz Pentium MMX microprocessor, 32MB of main memory and a 6.4GB hard disk drive for 248,000 yen. The model is equivalent to the DynaBook Portege 3020CT, a model aimed at the domestic market that was introduced on Jan. 7, 1999. Compared with the domestic model, batteries have been empowered to last 2.5-4 hours, and the standard hard disk capacity has been improved to 6.4GB from 4.3GB.

An A4-sized notebook PC, the Satellite 2540XCDT, comes with a 333MHz built-in mobile AMD-K6-2 microprocessor, 64MB of main memory and a 4.3GB hard drive for 298,000 yen. It is also equipped with a 56kbps modem (V.90, K56flex) and 14.1-in., color thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display monitor of 1,042 x 768 pixels. There is no Satellite 2540XCDT-equivalent model for the Japanese market.

An A4-sized notebook PC, the Tecra 8000 FA53, comes with a built-in 333MHz Mobile Pentium II microprocessor, 64MB of main memory and a 8.1GB hard drive for 428,000 yen. It is also equipped with a 56kbps modem (V.90, K56flex) and 13.3-in. color TFT-LCD with 1,024 x 768 pixels. There is no Tecra 8000-equivalent model for the Japanese market.
