  • MPT Urges New Standards for Digital Cable TV Terminals
  • March 9, 1999 (TOKYO) — Digital cable television (CATV) terminals need to be standardized, a Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications study group said in a final report.
The study group was established in December 1997 for the purpose of disseminating digital CATV in Japan. The report mainly discusses issues related to technical support for standardization of Digital CATV and it includes plans to promote digital CATV.

The group mentions that Cable Television Laboratories Inc. (CableLabs), a CATV research consortium in the United States (http://www.cablelabs.com/), is promoting the OpenCable standard specifications to improve compatibility among CATV terminals and usability among CATV system operators.

The report proposes the establishment of similar standard specifications tailored to Japan’s environment for CATV. For example, a user should hold two or more customer IC cards for accessing several CATV stations through one terminal.

The study group concludes that the government should set a policy for supporting research and development (R&D;) as well as standardization of digital CATV systems under such a basic infrastructure.
