  • Dell Japan Reduces Prices of Two New PC Models
  • March 9, 1999 (TOKYO) — Dell Computer Corp. of Japan reduced the prices of two models of Pentium III personal computers on March 3, the day after they hit store shelves.
Such an overnight price reduction is rare, even though cut-throat competition is intense.

Price reductions are welcomed by users, but observers said reductions occurring in such a short interval may cause users to be skeptical about vendor’s pricing.

The company reduced the prices of the 450 MHz Pentium Dimension XPS T450 and 500 MHz Dimension XPS T500.

The Dimension XPS T450 has a main memory of 64MB, an 8.4GB hard disk drive, a 40x speed CD-ROM drive and a 17-in. display. It was priced at 232,800 yen (122.84 yen=US$1) the first day of sale, but was reduced by 15,000 yen to 217,800 yen.

The Dimension XPS T500 has the same configuration. Its price was 262,800 yen, which was reduced to 240,800 yen — a 22,000-yen drop in only one day.

“We reviewed other vendors’ prices, and thus have made the reduction to maintain our price competitiveness,” a Dell Japan spokesman said.

Others vendors are setting a price of less than 200,000 yen for a PC with a 17-in. display.
