  • Japan’s PC Shipments Show Zero Growth in 1998: IDC Japan
  • March 12, 1999 (TOKYO) — Japan’s personal computer shipments in calendar 1998 totaled 7,923,410 units, showing zero growth compared with the previous year, IDC Japan Ltd. announced.
The PC market for households reached 2,644,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 28.4 percent, which exceeded estimates.

The launch of Windows 98, Sony Corp.’s notebook PC Vaio 505 series and the debut of iMac contributed to the growth, IDC Japan said.

Sony raised its ranking from 17th in IDC Japan’s survey in 1997 to 8th in terms of total shipments.

Sony has taken the third position in the ranking of home PC shipments, with a market share of 10.6 percent.

Apple Japan Inc. ranks 6th in total shipments (5.1 percent market share) and 5th in the household market (8.7 percent).

NEC Corp. holds the top rank with 26.9 percent in total, and runner-up Fujitsu Ltd. has 23.1 percent. The ranking is the same as the previous year.
