Cover Story: Digital Broadcasting Triggers FPD TV Race

Fueled by the launch of terrestrial digital broadcasting, Japanese TV manufacturers are releasing a number of large-screen, high-end receivers using FPD technology. Sony, for example, seems determined to make a strong showing in the crowded FPD TV market this fall with 27 new LCD and PDP TVs. It is becoming harder to differentiate products, though, and manufacturers are turning to image processing technology for performance boosts.
Technology Analysis: Video from Digital Cameras to Reach 1.3M-Pixels/Frame

A host of new digital still cameras offer VGA video at 30 frames per second (fps), and digital camera video performance is still improving. The next step is multi-pixel performance during video capture. Improvements to CCD imagers and the use of high-efficiency coding technology are likely to lead to video photography of 1.3 million pixels, 30 fps, by 2006.
