  • Prices of 15-in. TFT-LCD Monitors Decline Sharply
  • December 9, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Many venture companies that market PCs are introducing 15-in. thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) monitors priced at around 100,000 yen (US$830).
Meanwhile, the prices of 14-in. TFT-LCD monitors also are declining.

Sotec Co., Ltd., a notebook PC maker and marketer, is expected to ship in mid-December the ML-15K01 15-in. TFT-LCD monitor priced at 99,800 yen. Sotec has been accepting orders for the product since Nov. 16.

On Dec. 1, Akia Corp. , which has been marketing space-saving PCs equipped with an LCD monitor, launched its RT150WX low-priced TFT-LCD monitor (109,800 yen (US$920)).

Sotec's ML-15K01 is an OEM product made by Kookmin Data Systems, a Korean monitor maker. It will employ LCD panels manufactured by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.

The ML-15K01 has a resolution of 1,024 x 768 dots (XGA); its luminance is 200 cd/m2; the contrast ratio is 200:1; and the number of display colors is 262,144, Sotec said. It measures 338mm wide by 200.6mm deep by 406mm high, and weighs 4.75kg.

Akia's RT150WX employs a high luminance (250 cd/m2) LCD panel that is made in Japan. The RT150WX has features that automatically adjust the brightness of video and display positions. The maximum resolution is 1,024 x 768 dots, and it is capable of displaying 16 million colors in full color.

The screen size is 230.4mm (vertical) by 307.2mm (horizontal), Akia said. Its viewing angle is 120 degrees (up/down) and 140 degrees (right/left). The product's dot-pitch is 0.3mm, and the contrast ratio is 300:1. Its scanning frequency is 25-65kHz (horizontal) and 50-75Hz (vertical). The monitor is equipped with a sound speaker.

It measures 391mm wide by 175mm deep by 374mm high. Akia said the power consumption is about 30W (below 5W in energy-saving mode).
