NEC Starts Full-Scale Operations at PDP Plant
|
December 10, 1998 (TOKYO) -- NEC Corp. said it is at full-scale operations
at its new plant for color plasma display panels (PDPs).
|
The factory had been under construction on the premises of NEC Kagoshima
since October 1996.
According to NEC, the new plant is the world's first
mass production plant that can deal with two 42-in. panels at a time.
It can also produce a large-size panel of 60 inches, the company claimed.
It is now producing 3,000 panels per month, calculated in terms of 42-in.
panels. NEC plans to increase the panels to 10,000 panels per month
by March 1999 and to 30,000 panels per month within fiscal 1999.
Hiroshi Shiba, NEC's senior vice president, said the current yield rate
is 70 percent.
The plant is a large, two-story building measuring 275m x 65m x 25m.
Its total floor space is 32,000m2, of which 5,500m2
is for a clean room. The invested amount is 25 billion yen (US$209 million).
NEC dissolved its Color PDP Business Promotion Division into a new Color
PDP Division as of Dec. 9 in order to develop the business full scale
at the plant.
