Japanese, European Firms to License Home Network Specification
|
December 15, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Eight Japanese and European companies, including
Sony Corp., announced Dec. 10 that they will jointly issue licenses
for the HAVi (Home Audio/Video interoperability) specification version
1.0, starting in the spring of 1999.
|
The HAVi specification permits interoperability among various information
appliances and devices that are connected through a home network, based
on the IEEE 1394 standard and others.
The license includes HAVi-related patent rights owned by the eight companies,
and use of the HAVi logo. Actual granting of licenses will be handled
by Royal Philips Electronics N.V. of the Netherlands.
The HAVi version 1.0 specification uses Java as the byte code. It incorporates
enhanced security features to protect devices from computer viruses.
Also, the specification enables devices connected on a network to be
scheduled to start at preset times.
The beta version of the HAVi version 1.0 specification can be downloaded
for evaluation purposes at http://www.havi.org/.
The eight companies that will license HAVi are Grundig A.G. of Germany,
Hitachi Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., Royal Philips
Electronics N.V. of the Netherlands, Sharp Corp., Sony, Thomson Multimedia
S.A. of France and Toshiba Corp.
