  • Sega Sets High Sales Goals for Dreamcast Game Machine
  • February 5, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Sega Enterprises Ltd. plans to sell a total of 4 million units of the new Dreamcast video game machine by the end of March 2000, according to Sadahiko Hirose, a Sega executive vice president.
Hirose made the comment Feb. 1, when announcing the new video game UnderCover, which is produced by Pulse Interactive Inc.

Sega had sold 500,000 Dreamcast machines by the end of December 1998 and it projects total sales of 1 million units by the end of March.

At the current sales pace, when UnderCover reaches the retail market in June, cumulative sales of the game machine will increase to 2 million units, Hirose said. He noted that the cumulative sales will likely reach 4 million units at the end of fiscal 1999.

Sega said that it initially fell behind schedule in supplying the product, but that production is now steady.

The number of available video games exerts a great impact on the sales of game machines. Currently, only 10 game titles exist for Dreamcast.

Sega said that it plans to have 50 titles available for the machine. Pulse Interactive's UnderCover game is one of the 50 video games.
