[NET & COM '99] Telephones with VoIP Features Showcased at Expo
|
February 9, 1999 (TOKYO) -- At the NET
& COM'99, voice over IP (VoIP) telephones for demonstration and
commercial purposes were among the most popular products.
|
The exhibition was held at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba prefecture from
Feb. 2 through Feb. 5.
VoIP is a technology used for relaying voice over the Internet Protocol
(IP) network. It is already applied to Internet telephone and corporate
internal telephone networks. Specifically, each application adopts the
control protocol for VoIP, which is called H.323. It was developed by
the Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU-T).
The products exhibited at NET & COM '99 covered a wide
range of VoIP-related applications. For example, VoIP products for call
center operations were displayed by Lucent Technologies Japan Ltd. and
Iwasaki Electric Co., Ltd. (see photo).
The products from those two companies allow users to access a call center
via Internet telephone from a Web page.
Lucent's new product, called CenterVu Internet Call Center, is due to
be delivered in March. Iwasaki Electric plans to introduce its WebTelephony
System around this summer.
Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. exhibited a product for building a corporate
internal telephone network on the IP network.
Nitsuko Corp. exhibited a demonstration version of a
multimedia terminal (see photo). The terminal is equipped with email
and video conferencing functions in addition to VoIP. Nitsuko intends
to commercialize the product by November.
Also, NTT International Corp. demonstrated a VoIP product to be used
by telecom carriers for providing telephone services on IP networks.
The product line is expected to be marketed from March. Moreover, NTT
International exhibited telephone sets with VoIP functions and the 10BASE-T
interface.
