| Japan's Computer Virus Damage in Jan. Drops 14 Pct.

February 12, 1999 (TOKYO) -- The number of virus damage incidents reported
in Japan in January was 198 cases, down 14 percent from the 230 incidents
in December 1998, the Information Technology Promotion Agency, Japan
(IPA) said.

That's also down 20 percent from January 1998, the IPA announced in its
report on Feb. 5.
Although the January incidents were less than the previous month, there
was a report of up to 150 PCs infected simultaneously.
IPA continues to appeal to users to install anti-virus software to prevent
attacks from contaminated incoming emails and MO/floppy disks.
Among the January incidents, the "Laroux" virus targeting Excel was the
top (69) problem-maker, followed by "Cap" for Word (18) and "Class"
for Word 97 (13). New viruses reported were "Protected," "Chack" and
"Nottice," which are macro viruses for Word.
"Protected" requires a special password for saving a document.
"Chack" displays a file with images of two men when quitting a Word application.
"Nottice" creates a new document and displays a message. No key entry
is accepted.
