Taiwan's LCD Makers See Competition from Japanese, Korean Firms
|
January 6, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Taiwan's producers of liquid-crystal display
(LCD) panels see competition expanding with rivals based in Japan and
Korea.
|
LG Electronics Co., Ltd. of Korea, along with many Japanese companies
-- including Sharp Corp., Hosiden Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial
Co., Ltd., Fujitsu Ltd., and NEC Corp. -- are set to expand their production
lines for LCD panels in 1999 and 2000.
According to Taiwan's Market Intelligence Center (MIC) of the Institute
for Information Industry, their total output of LCD glass substrates
is growing substantially.
Japanese and Korean companies make LCD panels in a variety of sizes.
They focus mostly on larger products, such as those measuring 550mm
x 670mm, 650mm x 830mm, 600mm x 720mm, and 660mm x 870mm.
By 2000, the sharp increase in large-sized LCD panels will significantly
alleviate the current short supply in the market.
Taiwan-based companies such as Chunghwa Picture Tubes Co., Ltd., Acer
Display Technology Inc., Unipac Optoelectronic Co., Ltd. and Hann-Star
Display Corp., will begin producing large thin-film transistor (TFT)-LCD
panels later this year.
Because their products will directly meet the demand of local makers
for TFT-LCD monitors and notebook PC displays, the re-entry of the Japanese
and Korean competitors is likely to have little impact on their shares
in the local market.
However, the increase in supply is expected to drive down prices of LCD
panels, according to the MIC. The price of standard TFT-LCD panels will
likely fall to the level of US$500 over the next few years, MIC researchers
said.
