Nanjing Records 1,850 Private High-Tech Enterprises

January 8, 1999 (NANJING, China) -- Nanjing, the capital of eastern China's
Jiangsu Province, is currently home to 1,850 private enterprises engaged in
developing science and technology.

Related enterprises employ more than 40,000 people and reported total
earnings of more than RMB5.2 billion (US$626 million) in 1998.
Ten enterprises have annual output values of more than RMB100 million each,
with outputs of about 30 ventures standing at RMB10 million each.
Some 68 percent of such enterprises are engaged in high-tech development
relating to electronic processing, bioengineering and pharmaceuticals.
Skilled technicians account for 59 percent of the total work force for
related enterprises, a figure that far exceeds the rate for state-owned and
collective businesses in the city.
