New Year Special Features '99

  • Japan's PC Sales in Second Week of Dec. Expand Sharply
  • January 11, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Japan's personal computer market is booming, with PC sales outlets jammed with buyers on the weekends.
According to data collected by GfK Japan, PC sales at about 2,000 shops in the second week of December (Dec. 14 - 20, 1998), increased 80.4 percent in volume and rose 75.8 percent in value compared with the same week a year earlier (Dec. 15-21, 1997). (See table.)

GfK Japan Ltd. is an information service company that deals with POS data of mass retailers of electric appliances.

On a week-on-week basis, the figures are down 2.3 percent in volume and down 3.5 percent in value.

The average sales price dropped by 2,723 yen, from 231,966 yen (US$2,070) to 229,243 yen (US$2,035).

This was the first time in five weeks (since the second week of November 1998) that PC sales were lower than those of the previous week. Nevertheless, the decrease in unit-based sales was as small as 2.3 percent.

Nikkei Market Access said that PC sales will remain brisk. On the whole, PC sales at such large retailers of electric appliances are expected to continue to be strong.

The average sales prices dropped recently, due partly to an earlier start of the 1998 winter sales campaign. The average sales price of desktop/tower PCs dropped by 1,415 yen (US$13).

Regarding notebook types, despite the slight increase in sales in volume from the previous week, the average sales price fell by 5,103 yen (US$45). Notebook PC sales were not as brisk as those of desktop/tower types.

The data GfK Japan releases are from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms. GfK Japan picked the 41 in 1996 and has been releasing their data since then.

GfK Japan covers a greater number of outlets with combined unit-based sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about 25 percent of total retail sales.
