New Year Special Features '99

  • Nintendo Expects Brisk Sales of Game Boy Color in First Quarter
  • January 14, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Nintendo Co., Ltd. said it expects sales of Game Boy Color to be brisk from January to March 1999.
Demand for game machines generally drops in January to March after Christmas sales season. Demand for Game Boy Color, however, did not shrink, and Nintendo said it will continue shipping one million machines a month.

Game Boy Color is the first hand-held game machine with a color monitor. The display is loaded with a reflective color thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel that has low power consumption. It was put on the market in Japan for 8,900 yen (US$80) on Oct. 21, 1998.

According to Nintendo, the reason for the favorable trend in sales is demand from those who want to replace their monochrome display with a color one, as well as from new purchasers. Nintendo said it had shipped approximately five million units of Game Boy Color by the end of December 1998, 2-2.5 million of which were for the Japanese market.
