Acer Display Slates Trial TFT-LCD Production for Q2
|
January 15, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Acer Display Technology Inc. is scheduled
to begin manufacturing thin-film transistor liquid-crystal displays
on a trial basis in the second quarter of 1999.
|
Acer Display is an affiliate of Taiwan computer maker Acer Inc.
Thanks to a shortage in the market that is unlikely to ease until the
year 2000, the company is expected to jump on the bandwagon just in
time to enjoy a booming TFT-LCD market.
The company, which is located in the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial
Park, will target LCD panels for notebook computers this year, offering
both 13.3-in. and 14.1-in. models.
Acer Display actually operates under Acer Peripherals Inc., a sub-conglomerate
under Acer Group. Acer Peripherals sold more than 6 million CD-ROM drives
in 1998, and the number is expected to continue rising this year.
The company's 1999 output of CD-RW drives, which did not begin until
early 1998, is seen hitting between 600,000 and 700,000 units.
As for DVD-ROM drives, Acer Peripherals plans to begin producing 6x or
8x models in the second quarter of this year.
Acer Peripherals also plans to develop high-level scanners of 600dpi
or even 1,200dpi this year.
The company will also boost the added value of its scanners, adding new
functions such as automatic paper feeding and installing masks.
In addition, the company is expected to become more active in the development
of the mobile phone handset market.
