  • Internet Users in China Top 1.5 Million in 1998
  • January 19, 1999 (BEIJING) -- The number of Internet users in China topped 1.5 million in 1998, up by 900,000 from the previous year.
    Beijing has 400,000 Internet users, the largest number in any province and municipality in China, followed by Guangdong Province and Shanghai.

    The Chinese have 540,000 computers linked to the Internet and more than 14,000 Internet service businesses, 3,550 of which are in Beijing.

    Internet users below the age of 35 account for 84.1 percent of the total number of users. Of these, 43.3 percent spend 1 to 5 hours each week on the Internet, 26.3 percent spend 5 to 10 hours and 20.1 percent spend more than 10 hours.
