  • Oracle Japan Moves Forward Shipment Date of Linux Oracle8
  • January 25, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Oracle Corp. Japan said it will ship its relational database management system for the Linux OS on March 18, earlier than initially planned.
The product, Oracle8 Workgroup Server for Linux Release8.0.5, originally was intended to be made available in May.

Oracle's Linux version of Oracle8 was released for sale in October 1998 in the United States.

However, with an increasing demand for the Linux version in the market and more Linux system integrators appearing, Oracle Japan decided to release Oracle8.0.5 for Linux earlier.

The company reportedly will try to replace 10-20 percent of the RDBMS market for Windows NT with the Linux version in one year.

The Linux version will target the low-end market covering electronic commerce applications over the Internet, a department server of an enterprise or application development platform for system integrators.

In addition, Oracle Japan will try to introduce Linux versions of "Oracle Web Application Server," "Developer/2000" development tool or "Oracle8 Enterprise Edition" by watching the market.

The price for "Oracle8 Workgroup Server" starts from 220,000 yen (US$1,940) for a five-user/10-client version, the same price as the Windows NT version.

Oracle Japan guarantees two Linux distribution packages, "TurboLinux" from Pacific Hitech Inc. and "Japanese redhat Linux5.2" from Itsutsubashi Research Co., Ltd.

Pacific Hitech intends to sell "TurboLinux Server," which bundles Oracle8 with TurboLinux, in March. That corresponds to Linux Oracle8 shipments from Oracle Japan.
