  • Secom to Enter Computer Network Security Service Market
  • January 28, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Secom Co., Ltd., a major company in the security service sector, plans to begin a new service in April 1999 to manage operations of systems related to network security.
The service will comprise monitoring against viruses and an authentication service.

As for anti-virus monitoring, Secom has become an agent (as a premium security partner) for the eDoctor Service provided by Trend Micro Inc., a vendor of anti-virus software.

Trend Micro's eDoctor uses the security management software called Trend VCS for monitoring and reporting cases of viruses in corporate systems.

"We expect Secom to help provide various services for user enterprises to which our 120 non-premium agents have sold products," said Steve Chang, president of Trend Micro.

As for the authentication service, Secom has entered into a corporate alliance with Entrust Technologies Inc. of the United States, a vendor of authentication systems.

In December 1998, Secom invested in Entrust Japan Co., Ltd. Secom owns 46 percent of the Japan unit. A certification authority will be established by using Entrust products and the certification authority will provide the authentication service.

Also, Secom plans to set up a center for managing network operations, which will work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and execute remote-monitoring of systems at client companies.

Secom's target for sales for the virus monitoring service is 200 million yen (US$1.76 million) in the first year, 600 million yen in the second year and 2.4 billion yen in 2003.

It hasn't set a target for the authentication business because strong demand probably won't arise until late 1999, a Secom official said.
