Microsoft to Support Chinese Government Internet Project

March 12, 1999 (SHENZHEN, China) -- Microsoft Corp. Chairman and CEO
Bill Gates signed a memorandum with China's State Economic and Trade
Commission and China Telecom in which he agreed to support the country's
"Linking Government with Internet Project."

The project was jointly launched by China Telecom, the China State Economic
and Trade Commission and 40 other governmental departments.
It aimed at improving the image and working efficiency of the government
departments and the co-sharing of information resources.
Microsoft will donate some information platform software and provide
technical backup and consulting services to help Chinese government
departments at all levels access the Internet.
Gates noted that China's "Linking Government with Internet Project" is
of great importance in accelerating the modernization of China's information
sector.
