Japan's Thin Client Shipments to Reach 40,000 in 1999: IDC Japan
|
March 18, 1999 (TOKYO) -- International Data Corp. Japan Ltd. (IDC) estimated
that Japan's shipments of thin clients will increase to about 40,000
units in 1999, up from about 2,500 in 1998.
|
This growth is triggered by the emergence of the Windows-based Terminal
(WBT) of Microsoft Co., Ltd. and similar products.
IDC said that existing Windows applications are available on thin clients
due to the WBT technology, and thus users are eager to introduce thin
clients. Another factor is the trend that major makers have started
sales of thin client products, accelerating the expansion of the thin
client market.
However, users generally appear to be more interested in the concept
of the Network Computer (NC) as opposed to the WBT, industry analysts
said.
