  • Number of Pager Subscribers Declines in Korea
  • April 10, 1998 (SEOUL) -- The number of pager subscribers is declining rapidly in Korea, with the total falling to 14.21 million in March from 15.19 million in December 1997.
SK Telecom, a major domestic telecom company, said its number of pager subscribers dropped to 6.9 million in March from 7.16 million in February.

Other Korean pager companies, including Naray Mobile Telecom Inc. and Seoul Mobile Telecom Inc., also said that the number of their subscribers in March decreased as compared with three months earlier.

On the other hand, Happy Telecom and Sejung Mobile Telecom said their subscriber numbers increased slightly due to sales promotions.

The declines are due to the slow economy, a saturated pager market and the launch of PCS services. Because of the fierce competition between PCS operators and cellular phone companies, customers can buy handsets for as low as 50,000 won.

Pager companies said they will improve their services to prevent more subscribers from canceling contracts.
